Eight Things That You Should Never Do Following A Meal

One must practise discipline when it comes to meal timing and eating habits to maintain good health. Knowing what to eat, eating it mindfully, and being aware of how much to eat is essential because improper digestion can result in a variety of health problems.

To achieve one’s nutritional goals, it’s also critical to be aware of some dos and don’ts before and after a meal, according to Nidhi Sharma, the founder of the online nutrition and fitness platform Half-Life to Health.

“Mistakes are common, and one might not recognise that they involve unhealthy behaviours.” According to her, many people have developed eating habits, but this is the ideal time to unlearn those harmful habits.

  1. Avoid getting in the shower right away. After eating, blood surrounds the stomach to aid digestion, and taking a bath causes a change in body temperature. Blood is diverted from the stomach surface to the skin surface to return the body to its normal temperature, which slows and impairs digestion.
  2. Avoid working out. After a meal, vigorous exercise can interfere with digestion. It might result in acid reflux, nausea, stomach/abdominal pain, and vomiting.
  3. Avoid napping or sleeping. After a meal, it’s common to feel like lying down. Due to this, a person may experience severe heartburn and wake up feeling satiated after eating.
  4. Don’t consume a lot of water. It makes digestion take longer. The stomach acid is diluted, and digestion is hampered by excessive water consumption. Most Indian dishes include plenty of liquid in the form of gravies, dals, sambhar, chaas, etc. The salads also contain a lot of water.
  5. Avoid forward-bending activities because they may cause acid reflux.
  6. Eat fruit before or after a meal to maximise nutrient absorption from the fruit.
  7. Steer clear of tea and coffee. They contain some phenolic compounds that prevent the meal’s iron from being absorbed properly.
  8. Refrain from drinking and smoking. Despite being bad for the body, consuming them right after a meal raises health risks.

Following a meal, one can engage in the following activities

  • Maintaining your mobility while avoiding strenuous activity It’s crucial to exercise, but don’t overdo it.
  • Consuming a half-cup of warm water helps with digestion and food breakdown. It may be especially beneficial for those who have digestive problems or eat their meals at odd hours.
